Haunting Shaniwarwada

Shadow Whisperer By Shadow Whisperer1 Comment1 min read151 views

In the heart of Pune, the Shaniwarwada Fort stands as a majestic relic of Maratha glory. But beneath its grandeur lies a chilling legend. In the 18th century, the fort witnessed the brutal assassination of young prince Narayan Rao, who was murdered by his own uncle, Raghunath Rao. According to local lore, Narayan Rao’s ghost still roams the fort, crying for vengeance. Visitors often report hearing disembodied screams and the echo of a child’s wails in the dead of night. Some claim to have seen a shadowy figure of a young prince wandering the corridors, and the fort’s walls are rumored to bleed when the anniversary of the prince’s death approaches.

I tell you, this happened to me in Pothigai Hills near Madurai. I was walking alone at night, thought to enjoy peace. Suddenly, the air got very cold, and everything went quiet.

Then I heard some strange sound, like whispering, but not in Tamil or any language I know. I turned and saw a woman under the tamarind tree. Her hair was long and messy, and her face I couldn’t see properly. But her feet… ayyo, they were turned backward!

Immediately I remembered what my paati told me—don’t look back and just run. But her voice, it was like pulling me closer. I bit my tongue hard, just like paati said, and started running like my life depended on it. The sound behind me became like screaming, but I didn’t stop.

When I reached the bottom of the hill, my legs were shaking. The villagers said it was the Naalai Peyi. They said it targets people who walk alone after dark. I don’t care if people believe me or not, but I’m not going back there ever again!
